OCR: 1) A multicylinder steam engine operating at long cutoff is self starting, even under load. This makes it useful for operating winches and locomotives without the complications of transmission and clutch. 2) It is possible to obtain relatively large output power from a steam engine, compared to a gas or diesel engine of the same displacement. This is achieved, again, by operating at long cutoff, although the efficiency is very low. Also, some older (fire tube) boiler designs stored a lot of hot water and steam, making it possible to operate briefly at much higher power output levels than the continuous engine/boiler rated output power.
